Inspiring People

Abdul Sattar Edhi

(1928-2016)

Abdul Sattar Edhi is the founder of Edhi foundation in Pakistan having branches all over the world.

Reason for inspiration:

Edhi's life story is amazing with the roots of his concern for humanity existing right from the start. It is stated that Edhi's mother used to give Edhi 2 paisas/ coins daily when he set for school and told him to spend one for himself and the other one for some other person. His mother fell sick when Edhi was 11 years old and he took care of his mother. In 1951, he opened a small dispensary with the help of a doctor who taught Edhi basic medical care.

Edhi foundation is credited for having the largest number of ambulances in the world (Guinness Book of World Records). He also has the world record for working for the longest time without taking a single holiday. Edhi has received honorary "Doctorate" degree from Institute of Business Administration (I.B.A.), Karachi, Pakistan.

What is amazing is that Edhi used to sleep outside his dispensary so that anyone who might be in the need of help may awake him up.

Edhi foundation has clinics, maternity homes, shelter for mentally retarded, poor, orphans, handicapped, vulnerable women and old people as well as soup kitchens, schools, adoption center, mortuaries, blood banks and nursing homes. A baby cradle can be found outside Edhi center with the purpose of leaving the new born if parents cannot up bring the child or the child born illegally. The message of 'do not kill the child' is written below the cradle.

He only has 2-3 shalwar kameez (official dress of Pakistan) which he wears and only one pair of slippers which he is reported to have been wearing since last 2 decades. Though having a budget of more than 10 Million U.S. dollars, Edhi does not take anything for himself out of this budget as he believes that the money needs to be spent on the deserving people. He never drove any other car than his ambulance.

He has won many national and international awards for his great cause.

Edhi passed away on 8th July, 2016. He was the second civilian after Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah to be given state funeral and in his honor, State Bank of Pakistan decided to issue 50 rupees coin. Again this will be the 2nd person ever in history of Pakistan to be featured on currency.
